On Saturday 2nd October, the 15th edition of the 2010 Wine Harvest Evaluation of the South of Mendoza, Argentina, was carried out. White wines achieved the best results, among them a Tocai Friuliano and a Sauvignon Blanc stood out.

With an important attendance of wine producers, winemakers, sommeliers, journalists and consumers, the 15th edition of the 2010 Wine Harvest Evaluation of the South of Mendoza, Argentina, (“CODEVIN Sur”) was carried out.

This year, there were approximately 84 samples from 24 participating local wineries. Among these samples, 14 were selected for the tasting: three white wines (Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Tocai Friuliano), a rose Merlot and 10 red wines (Tempranillo, Syrah, 2 Merlot, 2 Cabernet Sauvignon, a Bonarda and 3 Malbec).

The president of San Rafael’s Chamber of Commerce and executive director of Fondo Vitivinícola, Pablo Asens, pointed out that the selected harvests were excellent.

Furthermore, as regards quality, he added: “The Mendocinian south has showed very similar quality in the last three years. From 2008 to 2010, including 2006, the harvests have been the best of the last decade. This is mainly due to the rain shortage and grapes free of diseases. Besides, grapes have got a good ripening point at harvest time and the temperature average has been suitable.”

Moreover, he emphasized: “We have been really surprised by Malbec and Cabernet Sauvignon for aging, which every year gain more and more prominence due to their improvement in quality.”

In the case of white wines, he highlighted the Sauvignon Blanc and Tocai Friuliano. “This last grape variety, which is growing very well in the south of Mendoza, is not so well known and is little by little gaining international relevance,” he maintained.
