In the last edition of the US magazine Wine Spectator, in the section called “New Wines from Around the World”, the editor and wine critic James Molesworth rated 18 Malbec and blends from Argentina. One of the awarded wines comes from San Juan, another one from Salta and 16 of them come from Mendoza.
The list of selected Argentinian wines included scores between 84 and 91 points. The wines with the highest scores (91 points) were Malbec Mendoza Gran Riserva 2007 (Ave), Riglos Gran Corte Mendoza 2007 (Finca Las Divas) and Privada Mendoza 2007 (Norton).
In second place, Molesworth rated Amano Remolinos Vineyard Agrelo 2007 (Finca Decero) and Malbec Mendoza Gran Reserva 2006 (Lamadrid) 90 points.
Four wines achieved 89 points, they were: Malbec Luján de Cuyo Brote Negro 2006 (Viña Alicia), Ca’ de Calle Reserva Mendoza 2008 (Bodega Elvira Calle), Malbec Agrelo Remolinos Vineyard 2008 (Finca Decero) and Malbec Mendoza Barrel Select 2007 (Norton).
The wines rated 87 points were Malbec Luján de Cuyo Las Compuertas 2007 (Viña Alicia), Amancaya Mendoza 2008 (Bodegas Caro), Malbec Mendoza Serie Magno 2007 (Fantelli) and Malbec Mendoza Casa 2008 (Familia Marguery).
Finally, the last awarded wines of the list were Malbec Mendoza Premium 2008 (Ave) and Malbec Mendoza Adibit 2007 (Monte Austral) with 86 points, Malbec Calchaquí Valley Don David Reserve 2008 (Michel Torino) and Don Manuel Villafañe Keltehue Winemaker’s Select Red Maipú 2008 (Villafañe & Guzman) with 85 points, and Malbec Tulum Valley Alta 2009 (Bodegas Callia) with 84 points.
