2012 Report / 1st part

Tim Atkin’s ranking of wines

October 3, 2012 by Laura Saieg | in Awards, News

During the past months, the UK journalist tasted more than 500 wines of Argentina. In his last report on this country, Atkin centered on those scoring 90 and upwards. See all them here.

Every year, Tim Atkin publishes a special report on Argentina. In this opportunity, WineSur decided to review it bit by bit. In this first part, those wines distinguished by the expert are mentioned below, as well as the top 10s of wineries and wines.

In relation to the list of wines, Atkin decided to focus on those exponents scoring 90 points and upwards, which were selected from a total of 500 samples. As he highlights in the report, “I’ve suggested a drinking window for each wine and, where appropriate, provided its varietal make up”.

As regards how the tasting was carried out, the journalist explained: “The wines for this report were tasted in Argentina and London over a period of nine months. Some were tasted at individual wineries, but many were assessed at bespoke tastings organized by Wines of Argentina in Mendoza and Buenos Aires. I tasted a lot of these wines on more than one occasion. All of the wines were tasted sighted. There are pros and cons of working in this way. On the downside, it’s hard not to be influenced (at least partly) by the sight of a famous label. But there are positives, too. Wherever possible, I prefer to talk to the winemaker or the winery owner about the vintage, the blend, the alcohol level and the style of his or her wine. Failing that, I like to consult a technical sheet while I am tasting the wine in order to understand it better”.

Among the best rated examples (between 96 and 98), he included: 2001 Nicolás Catena Zapata, scoring 98 points; followed by 2008 Pulenta Estate Gran Corte, with 97; and then with 96 points, 2008 Bressia Monteagrelo Malbec, 2009 Cobos Malbec, and 2006 Nicolás Catena Zapata.
