Business case - Bodegas Salentein

High quality wines committed to their land

From vineyards in the upper reaches of the Uco Valley, Mendoza, Bodegas Salentein aims to change the face of Argentinian winemaking. The goal of the winery is to make the highest quality wines, while respecting nature and getting involved with the local community.

Salenteins three states located in the Uco Valley comprise 2,000 hectares, from which 700 hectares are currently planted with vineyards. The cultivated varieties are Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Tempranillo, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

The magnificent winery was designed considering both form and function. Its cross shape allows for customized gentle handling of the grapes, reducing the distances wine needs to travel between different winemaking steps. Each of the wings is a small winery in itself, with two levels: a ground level that houses stainless steel tanks and French oak vats for fermentation and storage, as well as an underground level for aging wine in oak barrels. The two levels allow wine to flow following a traditional gravity transfer system. The four wings converge in a circular central chamber, which resembles an amphitheatre.

Moreover, Bodegas Salentein uses state-of-the-art technology in refrigeration system to keep wines at low temperature, stainless steel tanks, mechanical stemmer, pneumatic press and gravity flow system. Besides, it includes French oak vats for fermentation and storage, including an underground cellar at a depth of 8 meters, where more than 5,000 oak barrels are aged at controlled temperature and humidity. These methods allow the winery to guarantee the highest quality in the winemaking process.

Salentein wine lines always emphasize the identity and personality of the Uco Valley terroir. As regards style, there are two big groups, the younger and fruity wines such as Portillo and Los Leones, and the lines with more structure, elegance and complexity such as Salentein Reserve, Salentein Numina and Salentein Primus.

Furthermore, Bodegas Salentein has got several international awards, including scores of more than 90 points granted by Robert Parker and Wine Enthusiast. Besides, it has achieved gold medals and trophies in international contests such as Argentina Wine Awards, Vinandino, Japan Wine Challenge, Malbec al Mundo and Decanter World Wine Awards, among others.

Export brands include Salentein Primus, Salentein Numina, Salentein Reserve, Salentein Selection, Winemaker’s Selection and Finca El Portillo. 70% of Salentein’s production is exported to 40 countries around the world. The main export destinations are Netherlands, United States, Brazil, Germany, Russia, Mexico, Denmark and China. Other export destinations include Austria, Belgium, France, Czech Republic, Finland, Malta, Poland, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Japan, United Kingdom, Canada, Colombia, Costa Rica, Panama, Paraguay, Puerto Rico and Uruguay.

Concerning the winery’s strategy in different markets, its Press and PR Manager, Matías Bauzá Moreno, explained that today Salentein aims to consolidate core markets, such as Argentina, and achieve further development in Brazil and other key Latin American markets.

Moreover, according to Bauzá Moreno, Salentein’s idea is to keep on growing in attractive and potential markets, focused mainly in Europe and United States as key markets. Besides, Salentein targets all those markets that may be attractive considering its consumption level and growth potential, such as Asia in the future.
